Grouping tiles in the estate waterfall

Grouping tiles allows you to condense and simplify the waterfall view and bring structure to the overall layout of a client’s waterfall.

Luminary Tip Grouping is a great way to simplify a complex estate.

Groups are great for ease of visualization or discussion with their clients. Many customers like to group entities by common characteristics. For example, if one child receives asset outright, in an inherited IRA, and in a GST exempt trust; consider creating a group for “Child 1’s Inheritance”.

Creating Groups

  • Click the “Edit” button (pencil icon) in the upper-right corner of the diagram.

  • Select a tile you want to group, then drag and drop it onto another tile you’d like to include in the group.

  • A pop-up window will appear, where you can:

    • Add a group name. This will display on the tile, so we suggest a simple, short name

    • Optionally, add a description for the group. This will appear on the tile.

    • Select any other entities to include in the group.

    • Select whether or not you want to “Apply the group to other sections”

      • If the entities selected appear in other sections, this option will recreate the same group across the death sections

  • Once you’ve made your selections, click “Create Group” to save your changes.

Editing Groups

You can edit a group by clicking the settings icon on a grouped tile, when in Edit mode.

  • Add or remove any entities in your group

  • Add or remove any descriptions for your group

  • Modify the name of your group

  • Ungroup All if you wish to remove the group

Automatically group tiles

The automatic tile grouping function organizes tiles into the following categories:

  • Individually owned in estate assets

  • Jointly owned in estate assets

  • Out of estate assets benefitting charity

  • Out of estate assets benefitting family or other individuals

Luminary Tip

You can edit automatically grouped waterfalls, making them a great starting point for organizing a busy household.

To apply automatic grouping to an existing waterfall:

⚠ Keep in mind that applying automatic grouping will override any custom layouts and grouping you’ve previously applied. ⚠

  1. Click the “Edit” button (pencil icon) in the upper right hand corner of the diagram

  2. In the upper-left corner of the diagram, select the “Auto Tiles” dropdown, then choose “Automatically Group Tiles.”

  3. Click “Exit edit mode” to save your changes.
